2ND YEAR RCA PRINTMAKERS

The Boxed Set – ‘Underground’

The Printmaking Department at the Royal College of Art has a tradition that
every year it creates a boxed set of prints.  These prints, created by the
graduating students, alongside members of staff and special guests, promote
the up and coming artists of the future as well as the talents of
established international artists. The boxed set also acts as a community
effort, bringing together and demonstrating the multi-faceted approach to
Fine Art that the Printmaking course offers.  Conceptual art, surrealism,
figurative, narrative, text based and the downright silly lie under the lid
of this box. Such is the varied and inter-disciplinary approach to the RCA’s
Printmaking course.

This year’s challenge was to make work round the idea of ‘Underground’.  For
display in the Subway Gallery in Edgware Road Tube Station, each artist was
free to choose his or her interpretation of this word and to make an edition
of prints, which encapsulated the essence of their practice, within the
limitations of the box size.

To launch this year’s boxed set, the Printmaking Department are having a
private view in the Subway Gallery.  This exciting venture by curator Gordon
McHarg has reclaimed an unused public space and converted it into a fresh,
ambitious art space, experimental by nature and totally fitting for the
theme of this year’s boxed set.

Our private view is 05.06.07.  Easy to remember.  6pm-8pm. A band will be
providing the necessary entertainment to accompany the launch of this new
work.  Intrigued?
